'Art' first performance of Dinner Box series

Damian Gillen wants shows staged by The Company Theatre, the troupe he founded with a group of friends 14 years ago in Austin, to be honest-to-goodness events.
That's why he does a one-night only show on Valentine's Day every year, and why the company tours across the state for limited engagements. With that idea in mind, he has been tinkering with the idea of dinner theater, but with a twist.

"What if you could see a show in your favorite restaurant?" he said. "It's an untapped market."

So, he's tapping it. The Company launches its Dinner Box theater series this weekend with "Art," which will be staged in an intimate storefront beside Ruben's Bakery and Café. Dinner will be served on the restaurant side, then the audience will move a few yards next door for the play.
"Art" seemed like a good choice to launch the series, Gillen said, partly because it's a good play, and partly because it only has three characters, making it ideal for a small space.   It also unfolds quickly. "The audience doesn't have time to get bored," he said.

Yasmina Reza's play is about three men whose friendship is seriously threatened when one of them sinks a huge amount of money into a painting that consists of a white canvas. One of his friends hates the painting and what it represents so intensely, the third friend is automatically shoved into the middle.

Gillen is directing and acting in the play along with Benji Regen and Jared Stephens.

They did the piece at the Stafford Opera House in Columbus last month, playing to 300 people. Plans are also in the works to do it at The Mark restaurant in Universal City on July 20.

If the idea goes over well, Gillen envisions an entire season of Dinner Box shows. Casts will be paid, and will be drawn from Company members as well as through open auditions.

Testimonials:

“The Rotary Club of North Central recently planned an evening of fellowship by inviting the Dinnerbox Series to present the play Blithe Spirit. The club members enjoyed the play tremendously and it was a joy to see them laugh and take pleasure in seeing the play but most of all, they benefited from having the play performed at their regular scheduled Rotary meeting. By doing so, it gave the members the opportunity to invite family, friends and prospective members for an evening of great performances and a great meal. Hats off for Damian Gillen for assembling a great cast. Their performance was first rate.” --Yvonne S. Valdez, North Central Rotary Club
