Theater review: Cast clicks in funny 'I Hate Hamlet'
That's a problem, since Rally has just been cast in a Shakespeare in the Park production of "Hamlet" in the title role. Rally's crisis, and how the ghost of John Barrymore helps to resolve both it and his frustrating romance with his girlfriend, a 29-year-old virgin, is explored in "I Hate Hamlet." Paul Rudnick's comedy is the latest installment in The Company's Dinnerbox series.
Director Damian Gillen wisely cast himself as Barrymore, and he works the role for all he's worth. For most of the play, he plays him larger-than-life, seductive and arrogant, delivering each punch line with just the right snap. His most affecting moment, though, comes in the second act, when Barrymore talks about the end of his career on the stage. Gillen strips away the artifice, plainly conveying the pain of that point in the great actor's life.
Gillen has good comic chemistry with Daniel Sparks, who plays Andrew. Sparks shows off some strong comic timing and is especially funny in his De Niro-does-"Hamlet" scene.
Benji Regan goes a little too far over the top in places as Gary, Andrew's producer pal, but it's an entertaining performance.
The women are fairly well cast. Becky Mathews brings just the right melodramatic notes to Deidre, Andrew's hyper-romantic girlfriend, and Ida Steele is solid as his agent, though her German accent wandered a bit at Thursday's preview performance.
Sarah Pais gives a nifty comic turn as the real estate agent who helps Andrew find an apartment and conducts the séance that helps summon Barrymore; she shows a real gift for physical comedy as she presses herself against the wall of the apartment, vainly trying to make contact with the dead.
Final performances of "I Hate Hamlet" are at 8 p.m. Thursday-Saturday at Ruben's Café, 14357 Blanco Road. Tickets cost $15 for the show and $20 for dinner/show combos on Friday and Saturday; tickets cost $25 for Thursday's Valentine's Day show, which includes a candlelit dinner and live music. I Hate Over Acting
ABOUT THE SHOW...
Andrew Rally seems to have it all: fame from his starring role in a hit TV series; a rich, beautiful, girlfriend; the perfect New York apartment; and the chance to play the greatest role of all time...Hamlet in Central Park.
There are, however, a couple of glitches in paradise. Andrew's series has been canceled, and he absolutely HATES HAMLET!
A botched séance porduces the greatest of Hamlet's - John Barrymore's ghost! Fortified by champagne, ego and a cod piece, he presses Andrew to accept the part and fulfill his actor's destiny.
The laughs are nonstop as Andrew wrestles with his conscience, Barrymore, his sword, and his codpiece...and the fact that he may fail as Hamlet in Central Park!
